We are the proud parents of Aidan, born in 2005. He is a wonderful, energetic child who was diagnosed at 2 1/2 years of age with autism spectrum disorder.
We have been on the wait list for government funding for almost a year. However, due to the importance of early intervention in the treatment of ASD, we have not waited for the government to step in. Aidan has been receiving private ABA for a year and a half, at great expense to us. He sees a speech pathologist bi-monthly, and has a music therapist. We are also trying biomedical interventions. He is also in a regular daycare program. On average, we spend about $3,000 per month on all of this.
Despite the financial strain, we have seen Aidan make huge strides since we started, and we are pleased with all of his achievements. No child should be denied help because of financial constraints. We can just imagine how much further behind Aidan would be without us paying out of pocket for therapy.
